Once per year the GGYA holds its annual National adventurous journey known as the Bahamas Award Scheme Expedition (BASE). This event started in 1992 and takes place on a different Bahamian Island every summer.
The Bahamas Award Scheme Expedition aims to give young people the opportunities to:
- Qualify for their Adventurous Journey Section at the Bronze, Silver, or Gold level
- Experience life Bahamas Award Scheme Expedition (BASE) on a different Family Island
- Live and work with young people other than their normal peers
- Receive training in the Award Programme
- Complete a 5 day Residential Project performing a community service at the Gold level
They have hiked, camped, kayaked and explored National Parks (land and sea) on Bahamian Islands such as Abaco, San Salvador, Long Island, Inagua, Eleuthera, Rose Island, Exuma, Cat Island, Andros, Bimini, Grand Bahama and Crooked Island. Sailing expeditions and explorations to six Bahamian Family Islands have been held in 2002, 2005 and 2007. Young people from Bermuda, Jamaica, Dundee Scotland and Saskatchewan, Canada have participated in BASE.
