Ninety-seven participants and leaders participated in the Governor-General’s Youth Award annual Bahamas Award Scheme Expedition.

The Gold groups hiked 5 days starting from Wemyss Bight Primary School to the light house at the eastern tip of Eleuthera. Jacks Bay was next, passing through Cotton Bay and then onto the North Shore Beach. Their final destination was Tarpum Bay Primary School.

Five Silver groups hiked from Jacks Bay to North Shore and then into Tarpum Bay.

The Bronze trek started from North Shore Beach into Quarter Sound and then into Tarpum Bay.

Taking part in BASE 2008 were five Gold participants from Bermuda and three Bronze and one Silver participant from Jamaica. Two leaders accompanied the Jamaica possee.

All groups participated in training sessions prior to beginning their respective adventurous journey.

Accompanying the groups was 19 supervisors in total.

The Bahamas Award Scheme Expedition aims to give young people the opportunities to:

  • Qualify for their respective adventurous journey
  • Experience life on a different Family Island.
  • Acquire additional leadership skills.
  • Live with other young people other than their normal peers.
